Notes for people on private wells

If your home gets water from a private well, nobody tests it for you. U.S. EPA rules that protect public water systems don't apply to private wells, so testing is up to the owner.CDC

This site collects the boring but useful details in one place: what to test for, how to read the numbers on a lab report, which rules apply in your state, and who to call locally. We take each fact from a government or university source, link to it, and date the page so you can see when we last checked it.

What we don't do: we never tell you your water is safe to drink. Only a state-certified lab can measure what's in your water, and your local health department can help you understand the results. Read the disclaimer.
New: Well Test Results Checker. Type in the numbers from your lab report and see each one next to the EPA benchmark it's usually compared with, with sources and the guide to read next. It runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
Free printable: Private Well Testing Checklist. What to test every year, after a flood or repair, and when buying a home, plus sampling tips and where to find a state-certified lab. Every item is sourced. Download the PDF (no sign-up).
Buying a house with a well? Read Buying a home with a well: what to put in your offer, which tests to order where you're buying, flow tests, septic distances, red flags, and a state-by-state table of home-sale testing rules, with a printable checklist.
