Certified well contractors, labs and home inspectors in North Carolina

North Carolina certifies individual well contractors. This list groups the state's current certified contractors by the employer and county the state lists for them, with each person's certification number and level. It also lists the commercial labs the State Laboratory of Public Health certifies for drinking water, and every home inspector on the NC Home Inspector Licensure Board's list. Filter by county or search by name.

How North Carolina certifies well contractors

• The Well Contractors Certification Commission, set up by the General Assembly in 1997, certifies well contractors through exams, certification, continuing education and enforcement. It's part of NC DHHS.¹²
• Four levels. Level A covers all well contractor work, including air and mud rotary drilling and geothermal loops. Level B covers most work, such as cable tool rigs and hydrofracturing. Level C covers grouting, well abandonment, liners and casing extensions. Level D covers breaking the well seal for pump repair and installation, chlorination and down-hole cameras.³
• Services listed are for searching only. The state says a contractor's certification level, not the services they list, decides what they may legally do. Not every contractor at a given level has the equipment for every service.⁴
• Ask to see the wallet card. Certified contractors carry a photo card showing the dates their certification is valid.⁴
• Testing: new private wells must be tested by the State Laboratory of Public Health (through your local health department) or a state-certified commercial lab before use, within 30 days of completion.⁵

Check a certification yourself

• Contractors: the state's Find a Certified Well Contractor page lists everyone certified, with certification number, level and date certified.⁴
• Home inspectors: the NC Home Inspector Licensure Board's Inspector Search, linked from the board's page at the Office of State Fire Marshal.⁶
• Labs: search the State Laboratory of Public Health's certified drinking water laboratories by the contaminants you need, or ask your county health department about testing through the State Lab.⁵

The list

The names below are the employers listed for certified contractors, and the county is the employer's county as listed. Many are environmental consulting, geotechnical or utility firms, which don't usually serve homeowners, so check the services column. We left out 30 certified contractors whose listing has no current employer (for example "Retired" or "Working in a different field"). Certified labs: the State Lab's list of certified commercial labs, which includes out-of-state labs that accept North Carolina samples. The list doesn't give a county, and labs are certified for specific tests, so use the State Lab's search above to check the tests you need. Home inspectors: names as the board lists them, with the inspector's county. We show the city but not the street address. Where the board's list flags a disciplinary action, we say so; read the details on the board's search.
